オーストラリア留学個別相談会―若者の街、秋葉原にて
初めに、オーストラリア大使館の担当者からの挨拶があり、約６０校の教育機関がオーストラリアから来日し、日本の留学エージェントや教育機関との提携を模索しているとの説明があった。今回目立つのは、各教育機関の指導的役割をする公立の団体、例えば、Study Gold Coast, Study Adelaide のような組織が参加していること。これらの団体は、州ごと、地域ごと、に組織されており、こぞって海外留学生の受け入れを促進する活動をしている。 大学だけではなく、公立・私立双方の中学・高校、英語学校、専門学校 TAFEでの海外からの留学生受け入れに積極的で、日本の留学生の希望に合わせて、２週間の研修から１年または１年以上の留学プログラムをも可能としている。
ライバルはカナダ留学か？
多分、口には出さないが、関係者は、オーストラリア留学のライバルは「カナダ留学」ということになると思っている。 これに比べて、アメリカ留学は、これは“断トツ”で動かない。さほど積極的な留学促進策を取っているわけでもないのに、アメリカには年間、１００万人以上の留学生が海外から訪れる。 だからこれは動かない。その次が、熾烈な争いだ。次にオーストラリアがおり、それをカナダが追う展開だ。その次には、イギリス、ニュージーランド。
説明会の後半には、ヴィザにつての説明があった。オーストラリアの場合、高校の就学許可証でも就労できる。 つまり、高校生のアルバイトが可能なのだ。 現地の日本人生徒に訊くと、英語に習熟した生徒は、大体はアルバイトをしているとのこと。 もちろん、勉学に影響が出ない程度。 それでもお小遣いにはなっているとのことだ。
